Group vs. Private Yoga: Understanding Your Options

If you’ve ever felt unsure about which type of yoga class to sign up for, you’re not alone. With so many options available, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start; or how to choose what will actually support your body, mind, and goals in this season.

Just like our spiritual rhythms change over time, so do our movement needs. Below, I’m breaking down the three most common class settings - traditional group classes, small group sessions, and one-on-one private sessions - to help you discern what might serve you best right now.

1. Traditional Group Drop-In Classes

What it is:

A public class where anyone can sign up and attend. These are typically held in studios, gyms, or community centers and follow a set class structure.

Best for:

  • Beginners who want to try yoga casually

  • Those on a budget

  • People who enjoy community energy

  • Practitioners with no major injuries or specific needs

What to expect:

  • A standardized class flow

  • General cues meant for a wide audience

  • Limited individual attention

  • A faster pace to accommodate the group

Pros

  • Affordable and accessible

  • Sense of community

  • Easy to attend without commitment

Cons

  • Minimal personalization

  • Harder to slow down if you’re burnt out or overwhelmed

  • Faith integration or trauma-informed care subject to the guide

This class type can be a great entry point—but not always the most supportive option if you’re navigating anxiety, chronic stress, or recovery.

2. Small Group Private Sessions

What it is:

A semi-private experience with a small, consistent group (usually 3–6 people) of familiar faces, often meeting weekly.

Best for:

  • Friends or small communities wanting to grow together

  • Women seeking more personal guidance without full private pricing

  • Those craving accountability and deeper connection

  • Clients wanting a gentler, more intentional pace

What to expect:

  • More tailored instruction and themes

  • Space to ask questions and have conversation

  • Speed of flow adjusted in real time

  • More collaborative environment

Pros

  • Personalized cues and modifications

  • Deeper sense of belonging

  • More room for prayer, scripture, or reflection

  • Gentle accountability and consistency

Cons

  • Less flexible scheduling

  • Slightly higher investment than drop-in classes

This option bridges the gap between community and personalized care.

3. One-on-One Private Sessions

What it is:

A fully customized yoga and breathwork session designed around your specific physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Best for:

  • Burnt-out women needing nervous system regulation

  • Trauma survivors or highly sensitive individuals

  • Those managing anxiety, chronic pain, or life transitions

  • Clients who want faith-centered, fully personalized care

  • Individuals returning from injuries

What to expect:

  • Individualized class planning in a collaborative form

  • Trauma-informed pacing

  • Breathwork tailored to your nervous system

  • More in depth education on the why behind techniques (if interested)

  • Integration of prayer, scripture, or silence (if desired)

Pros

  • Completely personalized

  • Deeply supportive and adaptive

  • Safe space to reconnect with your body

  • Flexible scheduling

Cons

  • Higher investment

  • Less peer interaction

This is often the most healing option for women who feel disconnected from their bodies or overwhelmed by traditional classes.

How to Choose What’s Right for You

Rather than asking “Which class is best?”, try asking:

  • What does my nervous system need right now?

  • Do I need community—or quiet?

  • Am I seeking structure or personalization?

  • Is this a season for rest, restoration, or growth?

There is no “wrong” choice—only the one that best supports where you are today. If you’re unsure which option is right for you, I’d love to help you discern your next step.
