Most of us know what it feels like to be stressed—our heart races, our shoulders tighten, and our thoughts speed up. This is the body’s stress response, a God-designed system meant to protect us in times of danger. In short bursts, stress is helpful. It sharpens our focus and prepares us to act. But what happens when stress never seems to end?
The stress response is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system—our “fight or flight” mode. When activated, it increases heart rate, pumps stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, and signals the body to stay alert.
In a healthy rhythm, this response turns on when needed and then the body shifts back into the parasympathetic nervous system—our “rest and digest” state. That’s where the body repairs, restores energy, and experiences calm.
When stress lingers day after day, the body doesn’t get the signal that it’s safe to return to rest. Instead, the nervous system remains stuck in overdrive. Over time, this dysregulation can:
Disrupt sleep and digestion
Heighten anxiety, worry, and irritability
Drain energy and mental focus
Weaken the immune system
Make it harder to feel grounded and calm
Chronic stress doesn’t just affect the mind—it reshapes the way the nervous system functions, keeping us locked in survival mode.
Nervous system regulation is the process of teaching the body how to return to balance after stress. Simple practices like slow breathing, gentle movement, prayer, or Scripture meditation can signal safety to the brain and invite the body back into peace. Over time, these tools help “rewire” the stress response so it no longer dominates our daily life.
As believers, we’re reminded that God never designed us to carry constant burdens alone. Jesus invites us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Learning to regulate our nervous system is one way we can align with that promise—allowing body, mind, and spirit to rest in His presence.
Take three deep, slow breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.
Whisper a grounding verse, such as “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
Notice how your body begins to soften and release tension.
Even just a few minutes of intentional slowing down can begin to retrain your nervous system and remind your heart that you are safe, supported, and held. Learn more about how to implement a reset ritual HERE.
